Those of you who are new to Human Design meet Human Design at the Hexagram and Line level. It’s your entry point.

When we’re looking at a Hexagram activation, at the Line that is activated within a Hexagram, we’re looking at the surface imprinting, at the surface differentiation.

However, Human Design operates at many levels, and there is a very profound and very important substructure to the Line itself.

Below the Line: Color

We know that there are 64 Hexagrams, and there are six Lines in each Hexagram. But each Line has a subdivision called Color. There are six Colors to a Line.

The basic keynote of Color is motivation. What we discover in Color is the true underlying motivations of every aspect of our nature. And when we’re looking at the Color relative to our Profile, then we’re looking at the underlying motivation of both the personality and the unconscious.

Therefore this level, Color, beneath the Line, is extraordinarily important, particularly when we're looking at psychological or human services areas.

But the substructure doesn't end there.

Below the Color: Tone

Beneath the Color are Tones. There are six Tones for each Color, and Tone is a level that is exceedingly difficult for us to relate to.

In dealing with Tone, we’re dealing with infrastructure that operates through our sensory system. The Tonal level is exceedingly important for the future of health and humanity, and for how human beings—when they live according to their nature—can operate in a healthy way.

Through Tone we have a deep insight into what is the Primary Health System.

Below the Tone: Base

Below the level of Tone is the final level, which is actually the first level. It is in fact where the real imprinting is actually marked. This is the finite point in the illusion of the wheel, and it is called the Base.

There are only five Bases. Six Lines, six Colors, six Tones, five Bases.

Bases are the root of our transcendent incarnating process. As a matter of fact, when one looks at the concept of the human personality crystal, which has five facets, only one of those facets is functional; this is the Base of the personality.

And since the personality crystal is the only aspect of our process that is, relatively speaking, eternal (that has been in existence from the Big Bang), the fact that one operates through a specific Base is what leads to a deep insight into one's incarnation purpose.

The Importance of Accurate Birth Time

The reason I bring all this up was a request I received for exact calculation information on a set of triplets. It is extraordinary, that given the substructure of a Line, it is possible to find a differentiation in the most minute differences in time.

And this leads to the question of the time itself.

If time is not accurate it is not possible for us to even do a reliable surface calculation for a human being. It is one of the most important things to recognize. It is your responsibility that those who are going to come into the world truly have the right to accurate time.

Without accurate time it's not possible to open up the potential for a human being to live correctly as themselves. There cannot be a more profound gift than to give a child coming into the world the opportunity, if it seeks that opportunity in its life, to know itself with certainty and accuracy.

And, particularly when we’re dealing with schematics that are below the level of the Line, without accurate birth time it is not possible to do these calculations with certainty, and without certainty Human Design stops being a science. The collecting of birth time is something essential.

When is the Moment of Birth?

One final note about that. I've been asked many many times “Well, when is the moment of birth?”

The moment of birth is when the fetus leaves the womb entirely. It's not about when they take their first breath or when the umbilical cord is cut, it is only about the moment in which their entire body is outside of the body of the mother.
