An Introduction to PHS Determination in Human Design
Aug 24, 2026

Most of us have inherited our eating habits. We eat at the times our families ate. We prepare food the way we were taught. We sit where culture tells us to sit, in whatever light happens to be available, with whatever noise surrounds us. We follow trends, try elimination diets, and count macros, and still wonder why something feels off, why digestion is sluggish, why energy is inconsistent, or why the brain feels foggy after meals.
Human Design's Primary Health System, known as PHS, offers a different starting point entirely. It doesn't begin with what you eat. It begins with the conditions or circumstances under which your body is designed to take in nourishment.
Six Possibilities, One Determination
Within PHS there are six possible Determinations. You do not have a combination of all six. Your design points to one specific Determination, which describes the particular condition or circumstance your body is designed to take in and digest nourishment.
These conditions can be surprisingly simple and concrete. They may concern temperature, hotter or cooler, or sound, lower or higher. The specifics depend on the Determination indicated by your design, but the underlying principle is the same: your body has a particular way it is designed to ingest food and receive nourishment.

What PHS Is and What It Isn't
PHS is not a diet. It does not tell everyone to avoid gluten, eat more protein, or follow a particular nutritional philosophy. The emphasis is not on finding a universally correct set of foods. This can be disorienting at first. We are so accustomed to focusing on what is on the plate that the idea of attending instead to the conditions of intake can feel almost irrelevant. PHS shifts that perspective. Rather than asking only "What should I eat?", it introduces a different question: "Under what conditions is my body designed to receive what I eat?".
What supports one person's digestion may be entirely different from what supports another's. A circumstance that is correct for one body is not a general recommendation for everyone else. The point is differentiation: discovering the particular condition that belongs to your own design. Think of it less as a rulebook and more as a user manual for hardware that has always had its own requirements.
The Brain Connection
One of the more surprising dimensions of PHS is its relationship to the brain. In Human Design, Determination is not concerned only with what happens in the digestive tract. PHS addresses how we are designed to take in and digest food for optimal brain function, as well as for overall health and longevity. Following your own unique health strategy may support digestion, sensory awareness, brain function, and changes in lifestyle.
This means that the way nourishment is taken into the body has implications beyond whether a meal feels physically comfortable. Determination is part of a larger understanding of how the form is supported and how the brain functions optimally. Body and brain are not being treated as separate systems; the conditions under which the body receives nourishment are part of supporting the functioning of the whole.
For some people, this may make changes in mental clarity or sensory awareness as interesting to observe as changes in digestion itself. The experiment is not simply about whether food feels easier to digest, but about noticing what happens throughout the system when the body is consistently given the conditions that belong to its design.
How to Approach PHS
This is an experiment, not a prescription, and that distinction matters. Human Design does not ask you to take its findings on faith. It invites you to experiment with the mechanics of your own design and observe what happens.
With PHS, what you are experimenting with is your Determination. Once you know the Determination indicated by your Advanced Chart properties, that is the condition or circumstance you explore.
The experiment is therefore both simple and specific. Begin paying attention to the condition or circumstance indicated by your Determination. Give your body opportunities to receive nourishment under those specifics, and observe what happens over time. Notice digestion, energy, sensory awareness, and mental functioning. Notice what changes when the body is allowed to take in nourishment according to its own mechanics.
This is consistent with the larger Human Design approach: the knowledge gives you something concrete to experiment with, but your lived experience is where those mechanics are tested.
Why Digestion Often Gets Overlooked
PHS sits within the deeper levels of the Human Design System and is often encountered only after someone has already begun exploring the foundational aspects of their design. This is understandable. Decision-making, relationships, and life direction can initially feel more urgent than digestion.
But Determination can be remarkably practical, because eating is something we do every day. It offers an opportunity to observe the body and to discover what happens when its particular needs are respected. It can also challenge deeply ingrained assumptions about health and nourishment.
We live in a world filled with generalized nutritional advice: what everyone should eat, what everyone should avoid, when everyone should eat, and what counts as a healthy diet. PHS introduces a fundamentally differentiated perspective. Instead of asking what is correct for everyone, it asks what is correct for this particular body.
That can bring new significance to things that may previously have seemed like preferences or quirks. A sensitivity to temperature, sound, or another circumstance surrounding intake may be worth observing rather than automatically overriding. The body may have been providing information all along. PHS offers a framework through which to experiment with that information.
A Different Relationship with Eating
Ultimately, what PHS offers is not a better universal diet. It offers a different relationship with the act of taking in nourishment, one grounded in differentiation rather than cultural convention or generic nutritional advice. That is the larger principle behind PHS: not finding the perfect way for everyone to eat, but discovering the conditions or circumstances under which your particular body is designed to receive nourishment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PHS a diet? +
No. PHS is not a conventional diet and does not prescribe a universal set of foods to eat or avoid. Its focus is on the conditions or circumstances under which your particular body is designed to take in and digest nourishment.
Do I have all six Determinations? +
No. There are six possible Determinations, but your design indicates one specific Determination. The six are different possibilities for different people, not six conditions that one person needs to combine, balance, or work through.
What kinds of conditions does Determination describe? +
Determination describes the particular condition or circumstance under which your body is designed to receive nourishment. These can include conditions related to temperature, such as hotter or cooler, or sound, such as lower or higher. The condition that applies to you depends on your individual design.
Is Determination only about physical digestion? +
No. Within PHS, the way the body takes in and digests nourishment is also connected with brain function and sensory awareness. The experiment therefore involves observing more than digestive comfort. You can also pay attention to changes in energy, mental functioning, and sensory awareness as you experiment with your Determination.
How should I begin experimenting with my Determination? +
Once you know the Determination indicated by your design, begin paying attention to its specific condition or circumstance when taking in nourishment. Rather than treating it as a rigid prescription, experiment with providing your body with that condition and observe what happens over time. Human Design is intended to be tested through lived experience, so the emphasis is on observation rather than belief.
