Beginner 3: The Not-Self and Conditioned Mind

Ra looks at conditioning and the way it impacts each and every one of us. The not-self is living out a life based on what we are pulled towards, attracted to, and conditioned by rather than living out what is our imprint.

We are most deeply conditioned by our openness. Ra shows us how when we're operating out of our Strategy and Authority, our openness becomes the source of our wisdom. He shows us how to use our minds to watch the way our not-self works, taking us a huge step forward in the development of our consciousness and self love.

The uncolored areas in our chart— our Open Centers — are crucial to understanding our Design. It is these open areas that hold the distortions of the Not-self, and where we can get lost in homogenization. These open areas show what we’re not and what is not true for us.

Initially, we may see them as indicators of what we lack and where we fall short. As we walk through life without awareness, we tend to live what we are not. This Not-Self, our shadow, can trap us into living life in fear and worry. How can we live free of the shadow and instead realize the wisdom held in our open Centers?

In You and the Shadow, Ra addresses each Center, providing keys to understanding and meeting the shadow.

Within a partnership, two individuals engage with each other according to the mechanics of their unique Designs. But as soon as a child is introduced to the partnership a Penta is formed—an auric entity that functions according to very different mechanics.

Without awareness of how each family member contributes to a Penta, we can easily lose our individual identity and become subject to dynamics beyond our control. The Penta dynamic operates not only within families but any small grouping of 3 to 5 people; we all have experienced the distinct change when a third person joins a conversation…

Another trans-auric entity is the Wa, which forms when 9 to 16 people come together. We all become part of a Wa when we enter a public place or attend a large social gathering, and the Wa dominates most work environments. It is impacted by outside forces and without awareness of these forces we are left to the whims of the Program, a programming environment described by Ra as a formula without intent.

So how can we maintain our individual self within the powerful energy field of these trans-auric forms? In You and Your Family, Ra introduces us to the mechanics of Penta and Wa, and how to be aware of and deal with the impact of these powerful forces.

We are often taught that love and wholeness are obtained outside of ourselves. This conditioning usually leads us to seek out relationships for fulfillment. But why do we so often end up continuing to search, even when we get what we think will make us happy?

Human Design offers a simple approach to dealing with our natural attraction toward seeking. By honoring the mechanics of our auras instead of what our mind’s idea of what will make us happy, we can experience the bonding and fulfillment that is healthiest for us.

Conditioning, Love, Mind is a two-part, two-hour lecture, in which Ra discusses how fulfillment, happiness, and bonding are deeply tied to the mechanics of our Type.

Not-Self Purpose - Or the Madness of Being Normal is the second lecture of this series and focuses on how humanity is driven by a false sense of purpose, adding layer upon layer to the homogenized way of life that dominates the world.

Ra explores the themes of our open centers from a general perspective, highlighting the immense impact each of them has on the collective drive toward mental-decision making that can keep us stuck in an inauthentic way of life.

The Ego/Heart Center is the most complex part of the BodyGraph. With only four Gates, it connects to the Solar Plexus, G, Spleen, and Throat Centers, playing a part in several biological functions.

It is also the Center of willpower, tribal support, and competition—making it the most powerful conditioning force we have to deal with. Approximately 65% of humanity has an undefined Ego Center, making issues of self-esteem, willpower, and loyalty the greatest source of mental turmoil for Not-Self decision-making.

Having a completely open Center, a Center without any activations (dormant gates), means that there is no framework to relate conditioning to. This results in not knowing, sensing or understanding what the conditioning is really about. There is no theme to connect it to because it’s simply not a natural part of who you are, which can be very confusing.

The danger in having a completely open Center is the abdication of Authority. We are inclined to abdicate Authority with this openness, because the open Center’s conditioning is extremely powerful–experience can become so confusing that we would rather hand over decision-making Authority to someone else.

However, the beauty of the completely open Center is that it creates an extraordinary potential for wisdom. Without an activation to filter incoming energy, there is no thematic to hold on to, no prejudice toward one thing or another.

The mind is something we think is under our control. We think we have our own thoughts and make our own decisions, but this is not necessarily the case. Human Design teaches us about the Program, a homogenizing influence that consistently impacts the way we perceive and operate.

In this lecture, The Godhead of Mind, you will learn how the Program operates through the transit field and the archetypes of the Godhead, and how we are open to its conditioning forces that keep the collective mindset under control.

You will also learn which tools we each have to uniquely filter the consciousness field, thereby avoiding the conditioning that can keep us locked in. Ultimately, the journey is about awakening passenger consciousness.

In 2010, Ra and 15 students gathered in Ibiza for the 5-day Wa Immersion program, an exploration of both fundamental and advanced aspects of the BodyGraph. The course focused on a specific theme in the morning, and held a workshop analyzing the topic in students’ BodyGraphs in the afternoon.

Day 1 focuses on Homogenization and Keynoting your Not-Self. If you allow your mind to run your life, your life is never free of the world of conditioning that we live in, and there is no opportunity for transcendence. But how do we recognize the influence of that conditioning?

Ra explains that every open Center in your BodyGraph has a Not-Self theme that indicates what has been feeding your mind’s decision-making process. By understanding this process, we can recognize the force of conditioning in our lives, and learn from it rather than be misled by it. What we learn can then be shared through our Outer Authority.
