Intermediate 2: Profiles, Lines, and Incarnation Crosses

The foundation of Human Design Analysis is the hexagram and its structure. The Lines of the hexagram have always been taught from the surface. The line is the surface. Anybody who gets an education in Human Design receives information about the nature of the lines and certain values that have developed over time. In the Spring of 2008, Ra introduced us to an in-depth interpretation of Lines that goes beyond the surface and explores the underlying substructure. 

In this transcript of a six lecture series, Ra takes us on an adventure of looking at the lines from their number continuity and their relationship to the themes that lie below the line—the Base, Tone and Color. Deep underneath is the cognition that dictates how lines will be played out, and it will be different from anybody else’s line. In addition, you will learn that each of the values that Ra describes have a specific quality in relationship to the Personality and a different nuance when you look at them in terms of the Design. 

The profiles are divided into three different parts called angles. These angles carry with them a thematic of movement, a geometry. The first variation is the right angle and its geometry of personal destiny. Ra discusses what it means to fulfill your personal destiny.

Of the 12 profiles, seven of them are right angle: the 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 and 4/6. Personal destiny means having a self absorbed, inwardly focused existence. The nature of the right angle is to experiment with life, to discover the very essence of what life is, unto themselves. Their life is about what they make of it. When the right angles fulfill their personal destiny, there is the potential to transform the whole.

In profile, there are three different divisions: seven right angle profiles, four left angle profiles and in between them, the 4/1: juxtaposition.  The juxtaposition has the unique task of creating a bridge between the right and left angle profiles, and is therefore called the geometry of “fixed fate”.

The four left angle profiles are the 5/1, the 5/2, the 6/2 and the 6/3.  They have an incarnative geometry, a transpersonal karma that is determined by everyone who crosses their path. 

Through their connection with others the left angle can fulfill their destiny.  Ra discusses the very different left angle processes of the 5th and 6th lines in their role of transpersonal karma.

Ra begins this series with a look at the first profile, the 1/3, the Investigating Martyr.  This is a deeply self-absorbed person that seeks a solid foundation in order to feel secure.  Despite the need for security, they are also engaged in a trial and error process.

Join Ra as he examines the 1/4 investigating opportunist.  The 1st line investigator is making sure the foundation is solid.  The unconscious 4th line is waiting for the right opportunity to externalize their foundation, so they can be of influence and impact people that are within their network.

Join Ra as he examines the 2/4 hermit-opportunist.  The 2nd line has a natural gift or talent and is here to be called. They are easily projected on due to their natural abilities.  The 4th line is the opportunist who is influential within their network.  When the 2/4 gets called out it has great power as a “missionary.”

Join Ra as he explores the 2/5 hermit-heretic.  Both the 2nd and 5th lines are lines of projection.  While the 2nd line wants to be left alone and waits for the call, the 5th line is unconsciously seducing and pulling forces towards it. 

The 2nd line is a natural, and is shy, while the 5th line heretic must learn to be practical to avoid risking their reputation.

The 3/5 is the martyr-heretic. The 3rd line is the ability to discover, adapt, and sustain itself, as well as survive the “trial and error” process. The 3 is a deeply resilient personality that learns what doesn't work through making mistakes.

The 5th line underneath is pulling a strong projection and expectation from others, and can have a far reaching influence in the world. Ra discusses how a 3/5 can enter into experiences that are correct, so they can discover what is of value to others that needs to be universalized.

Join Ra as he explores the 3/6 martyr/role model.  The 6th line and its three-part life process, marked by the Saturn Return and the Kiron Return, is introduced here.  The 6th line is significant in terms of the 84 year, Uranian life cycle of the nine-centered being.

The 3/6, in discovering through its 3rd line theme what does not work, eventually brings the wisdom and the example of the 6th line role-model, as it moves through the stages of its process.

The 4/6 is the opportunistic role model. This last of the right angle profiles is made up of two upper trigram lines. It has a personal destiny but has a transpersonal quality in that it is a voyeur or a watcher of its social scene.

The 4th line opportunist personality is here to influence and externalize to those they know through opportunities which arise within their social network, while the 6th line body goes through its unique tripartate life process.

Join Ra as he examines the 4/1 opportunistic-investigator.  This profile is called a juxtaposition because it is the fixed point between the right and left angle profiles.  This is called the geometry of “fixed fate”. 

The unconscious investigator is working to establish a firm foundation in order for the 4th line personality to network, and thereby influence those they know in a uniquely fixed way.

Join Ra as he examines the 5/1 heretic-investigator, the first of the left angle profiles.  The 5th line has the gift of being able to universalize to strangers, and at the same time is constantly in a projection field. 

It is necessary for them to establish a firm foundation from their 1st line unconscious so that they will have something practical to offer.

Join Ra as he explores the 5/2 heretic-hermit.  We see the two lines of projection again with the 5 and the 2, this time as a left angle variation.  The 5/2 is a natural from its 2nd line unconscious and is also projected on with its 5th line personality. 

The natural gift of the 5/2 can become a heresy when it hears the right call to universalize.

Join Ra as he examines the 6/2 role model-hermit.  The 6th line goes through a maturation process in three stages, starting with the trial and error in the first 30 years, followed by the 20 year roof phase, and the final flowering period at age 50. 

With the unconscious 2nd line natural that waits to be called, the 6/2 is ultimately here to be the living example and unique role model of living naturally as themselves.

The 6/3 is the role model-martyr. The 6th line personality goes through a three-stage life process, starting with the 3rd line trial and error phase in the first 30 years. This makes it a 3/3 for 30 years, a period where mistakes are made and life can be very chaotic.

At around age 30 it goes on the roof and gets more distance but never quite leaves the world behind, because the 3rd line unconscious continually draws it back into the world. Ultimately it gains great wisdom as a 6th line role model, yet it never stops making its 3rd line discoveries.

The 1st Line Personality is the archetype of The Investigator and is the first of the lower Hexagram Profiles bringing the introspective process of research to establish a solid foundation. The fulfillment of this role is only possible when the Personality is properly motivated to search for correct information.

The Human Design System synthesizes aspects of ancient observational systems and more contemporary disciplines. Through the Rave Mandala, one of the ancient systems Human Design relates to is the I’Ching.

The Rave Mandala has 64 numbered sections in the outer ring, and those sections represent the 64 hexagrams of the I’Ching. The 64 hexagrams around the outer wheel, translated into the BodyGraph as Gates, each consisting of six Lines. These Gates are used in Human Design to thematically understand our genetic imprint, and provide very specific detail about the characteristics that make up each of us.

Human Design is a science of differentiation. As Ra put it, “Human Design is about the potential of the expression of uniqueness.” The Lines of the BodyGraph would seem to have the same meaning for everyone. But the Lines themselves live through one’s holistic life, coming alive as one lives life correctly; thus they are expressed differently in each individual through the framework of our unique Design.

Profile is a profound way to describe our purpose in life. By looking at the Lines of our Personality and Design Sun/Earth activations, we can see that we are each here to fulfill a unique role.

Ra Uru Hu describes the Cross of Life as being “at the very basis of Human Design.”

In a lecture Ra first gave at the Human Design event in Ibiza in 2008, he called this the “skeleton” of a chart. As each component of the Cross is explored in this lecture, we not only begin to see our uniqueness in how we can live and move through our life; we understand the Cross as holding the keys to the holistic experience of life.

What makes up The Cross of Life? In the BodyGraph, the cross is represented by both the Design and Personality Sun/Earth positions, and the lunar Nodes. As we filter the unique life force represented by our Sun’s position, it is received and grounded through the position of our Earth. The Lunar Nodes show the journey we are taking in this life; they set the stage and connect us to the environment that brings us the right experiences, and see the world in a way unique to us.

Together, these elements of The Cross of Life tell each of us what is possible for us, how we are meant to differentiate, and how to live our Design. But the insight they hold for us depends on our ability to understand ourselves through these elements, rather than by letting our mind and the not-self rule our life.

The Nodal Environment represents the ‘horizontal’ movement of the Cross of Life, as the Sun/Earth polarity represents the ‘vertical’ consciousness stream. Ra explains how each of the 32 Nodal polarities provide the background and set the stage for what we encounter in the environment of our life process.

A three-part introduction is included, which articulates the mechanics between the Sun/Earth and the North/South Nodes of the Moon and gives insight into the potential for anyone to fulfill their purpose.
