Steve Jobs' Incarnation Cross
Oct 19, 2026

The type, the authority, the profile, the channels, the definition, the open centers: all of that describes the mechanics of how Jobs operated. But every chart also carries a larger thematic direction, something that organizes all those mechanics into a life purpose. In Human Design, that's the Incarnation Cross. It's the overarching theme of what a person's life is about when they're living correctly. The cross is formed by the positions of the Sun and Earth at the time of birth and in the design calculation, creating four gate activations that together describe the role the person is designed to play in the world. It accounts for roughly seventy percent of who someone is. Everything else in the chart (the channels, the centers, the profile) operates in service of this larger direction.
Jobs carried the Left Angle Cross of Spirit, formed by Gates 55 and 59 with Gates 9 and 16. The Left Angle designation matters. Left Angle crosses are transpersonal. They operate through interaction with others. The person's purpose unfolds through relationships and encounters rather than through a fixed personal destiny. A Left Angle life doesn't follow a predetermined arc the way a Right Angle life does. Instead, the direction keeps getting shaped by whoever shows up. Each significant relationship, each collaboration, each encounter bends the trajectory.
Steve Jobs was 6/3 Profile born on the Left Angle Cross of Spirit (55/59 | 9/16).
For Jobs, this is visible in how dramatically his life changed based on the people he connected with. Wozniak pulled him one direction. Being fired by John Sculley pushed him another. Jony Ive's arrival at Apple reshaped everything again. The life wasn't a straight line from inner vision to outer fulfillment. It was a series of meetings and entanglements that kept redirecting the whole enterprise. That's the Left Angle operating.
The Cross of Spirit itself is about pleasure, creativity, and emotional abundance. The core drive is to nourish the spirit through experience, specifically through creative work, romantic and sexual connection, and the sheer enjoyment of being alive. People carrying this cross seek out situations that make them feel full. They want to experience life's richness, and they want to share that experience with others. There's a seductive quality here, and it's not limited to romance. It extends to how they present ideas, how they draw people in, how they make others want to participate in whatever they're creating.
Jobs was one of the most seductive figures in the history of the technology industry, and the seduction operated on multiple levels simultaneously. He seduced engineers into believing they could build the impossible. He seduced consumers into wanting products they didn't know they needed. He seduced investors, board members, partners, and the press. The mechanism wasn't manipulation in the calculated sense. It was spirit. He genuinely took pleasure in the creative act, in the experience of making something beautiful and functional, and that pleasure was infectious. When he stood on stage and held up a new device, what he was transmitting was his own delight. His spirit was nourished by the act of creation, and the audience could feel it.

Personality Sun - Gate 55.6
Gate 55 is the Gate of Spirit, sitting in the Solar Plexus. It carries the emotional wave of abundance and emptiness: moods that shift without any external cause. One moment the spirit feels full, overflowing, ecstatic. The next it feels drained, empty, melancholic. There's no rational explanation for the shift. It just happens. This gate is part of what gave Jobs his famous mood swings. The reports from people inside Apple consistently describe a man whose emotional state could change completely from one hour to the next. He could be jubilant about a product in the morning and despairing about it by afternoon, with nothing having changed in the product itself. That's Gate 55. The spirit moves through its own cycle, independent of circumstances.
The need to feel the abundance of spirit, and the strain of dealing with its absence, drove much of Jobs's behavior. When his spirit was full, he was the most compelling person in the room. Creative, generous with praise, excited about possibilities, magnetic. When his spirit was empty, he could be cruel, dismissive, and impossible to reach. The people around him learned to read his moods, because the mood determined everything. This wasn't something Jobs could control. The emotional wave of Gate 55 doesn't respond to willpower or positive thinking. It runs on its own schedule. What a person can do is recognize the wave for what it is and avoid making permanent decisions at either extreme. Jobs sometimes managed this. Often he didn't.
Personality Earth - Gate 59.6
Gate 59, the Gate of Sexuality, sits in the Sacral Center and carries the energy of intimacy and the breaking down of barriers. It's designed to get close to people, to dissolve the walls between individuals so that creative and reproductive energy can flow. This gate has a penetrating quality. It pushes through resistance. It doesn't accept closed doors. In Jobs, this showed up as his refusal to accept boundaries that other people considered reasonable. He would call people at any hour. He would show up unannounced. He would insert himself into processes that weren't his to manage. The breaking down of barriers wasn't always welcome, but it was consistent. He dissolved the separation between himself and whatever he wanted to engage with, whether that was a person, a project, or an industry.
Combined with Gate 55, Gate 59 creates a dynamic where the emotional richness of spirit seeks outlet through intimate creative partnership. Jobs's most productive relationships had this quality. His work with Ive wasn't a conventional executive-designer relationship. It was intimate. They spent hours together, sometimes in silence, looking at prototypes, feeling their way through design decisions. The barrier between their roles dissolved. That's Gates 55 and 59 working together: spirit seeking expression through closeness.
Design Sun - Gate 9.3
Gate 9, the Gate of Focus, we've already seen operating through the Channel of Concentration. In the context of the cross, it adds the capacity to bring sustained, detailed attention to whatever the spirit is engaged with. The pleasure-seeking, spirit-nourishing drive of the cross doesn't stay abstract. It gets channeled into specific, focused work. Jobs didn't just want to feel alive and creative in some vague sense. He wanted to focus that feeling into a particular product, a particular interface element, a particular user experience. Gate 9 gave the cross its practical edge.
Design Earth - 16.3
Gate 16, the Gate of Skills, sits in the Throat and carries the energy of enthusiasm and the identification of what skills are needed to master a given endeavor. It brings a natural enthusiasm for mastery, for developing competence and expressing it. In Jobs, this showed up as his deep respect for craftsmanship and his ability to identify who had genuine skill and who was faking it. He could tell when someone had truly mastered their craft, and he sought those people out. His enthusiasm for great work was real. When he encountered something done with genuine skill, whether a perfectly designed hinge, a beautifully written piece of code, or a typeface that worked exactly right, his excitement was visceral. Gate 16's enthusiasm is what made his product presentations feel alive rather than rehearsed. He wasn't performing excitement. He was expressing the gate's natural response to mastery.
The full cross (55, 59, 9, 16) describes a life organized around the nourishment of spirit through creative pleasure, intimate partnership, focused attention, and enthusiastic mastery. Every major chapter of Jobs's career can be read through this lens. The early Apple years were a burst of creative pleasure and intimate partnership with Wozniak. The exile years were a period when the spirit felt empty, with Gate 55's wave at its lowest, and Jobs searched for new sources of nourishment through NeXT and Pixar. The return to Apple was the spirit refilling, finding new intimate creative partnerships, applying focused attention and enthusiastic mastery to products that would change entire industries.
The Left Angle aspect meant that none of this was predetermined. Each phase required the right people to show up. Each shift in direction came through an encounter. The cross didn't guarantee success or satisfaction. It described the thematic territory Jobs's life would cover. Whether he experienced that territory as nourishing or depleting depended on whether he was operating through his Generator response, waiting for emotional clarity, and allowing the 6/3 profile's phases to unfold in their own time. When the mechanics aligned with the cross, the spirit was abundant. When they didn't, the strain of the changing moods made everything harder: Gate 55's emptiness, the frustration of the not-self Generator, the snap decisions of an unresolved emotional wave.

By the end of his life, Jobs had become exactly what the Left Angle Cross of Spirit describes at its most mature: someone whose creative pleasure, whose enthusiasm for mastery, whose willingness to dissolve barriers and get close to the work, had produced things that nourished the spirit of millions of people. The products weren't just functional. They carried feeling. They had spirit in them. That's what happens when someone living this cross operates through it fully. The pleasure they take in creation becomes embedded in what they create, and other people can feel it when they pick it up and use it. The iPhone in someone's hand carries the residue of Jobs's delight in making it. That's the Cross of Spirit doing what it's designed to do: transmitting the nourishment of creative engagement outward, through the work, into the world.
